Thursday Threads is an informal community wellbeing group that meets weekly at the Hive Community Centre in Peasedown St. John near Bath. Funded by Creativity Works, the group was formed with a focus on creating for mental wellbeing through textiles.

The group creates ‘story cloths’, fabric collages with hand stitching and embellishments that depict a personal story. The cloths are not planned in advance but develop through intuition, discussion, and trust in the creative process. Hand stitching allows for participants to slow down and enter a state of flow, developing connection to the self as well as others in the group during the process.

The group have become connected through their shared joy of creating with textiles, weaving shared narratives, laughter, and support into their creations. The group has since become peer led and has diversified and developed to include other creative projects repurposing materials to make a variety of other textile based outcomes, such as rag wreaths to felting, quilting and up-cycling clothes.

Curated by Samantha Hickman and Thursday Threads, supported by Creativity Works

Exhibiting Artists: Ann, Anna, Barbara, Guinevere, Hazel, Janet, Jess, Kat, Lee, Lesia, Lynda, Ruth, Sandra and Sybil.

Creativity Works are proud to support the Thursday Threads group members and artist Samantha Hickman. The creative and empowering process of story cloths has promoted positive relationships and recovery for group members where participants say they have gained self-confidence, increased their sense of resilience, and learnt new skills. The sharing of stories, skills and creative approaches has been heart-warming in this friendly and supportive group.

Creativity Works is an award-winning socially engaged art charity, based in Bath and North East Somerset, whose mission is to use the power of the creative process to bring people and places together to create a better future for themselves and their communities.
