The exhibition I want to explore is about jobs that are socially appreciated but not valued or considered aspirational. People do not value these jobs economically or socially, and they see them as “stupid jobs”. Like your local binman, waiter and bus driver without these people providing a service to you, making you have a better quality of life. They are more crucial than your CEO and lawyer. These jobs shape the experiences that people often take for granted. I'm reconsidering how we see unwanted jobs that we need. I want artists to make art about tension between the stupid jobs and the lack of respect they receive and the need for them.
Curated by Sangkavy Ketharalingam
My name is Sangkavy Ketharalingam. I am currently studying Fine Art and History of Art at the University of Leeds. I'm an artist that makes art for herself. I see my art almost as a visual diary or a visual reflection to help me understand the world better, which I depict through using a range of 2D materials. I love placing the small thing in my artwork, like the stack of rings that you wear on your finger or your bedroom but connecting them to larger contexts of our society. I believe placing things in the small, helps us not lose ourselves within the large contents of society and theories. Placing the subject in people or communities instead of theories and ideas.
