Artmusic presents
Secret Staircase
A new sound installation for vertical spaces
Composer - Helen Ottaway
Tenor and soprano saxophones - Nick Sorensen
Image - David Daniels
Recording - Alastair Goolden
Secret Staircase is inspired by beautiful, dramatic and quirky staircases around the world and by depictions of staircases in art, literature and mythology. Rising, falling and floating musical phrases have been combined to create three independent sound loops of minutely varying lengths. The relationship between the loops shifts gradually as they repeat, each repeat lasting just over ten and a half minutes. The sound is relayed from loud speakers at the top, middle and bottom of the staircase. The audience is invited to listen from any position or on the move.
Frome-based Artmusic creates collaborative and site-specific work locally, nationally and internationally. Formed in 1999 the organisation has produced work by artists from different disciplines working together in extraordinary places including the roof of Salisbury Cathedral; a disused quarry, a woodland on a Frisian island and underneath Glasgow Central Railway Station.
