Karen Wallis, Artist
Karen Wallis draws and paints the everyday world, bearing witness to events around her. She is interested in how art can facilitate conversation and its potential for contributing to the research activity of other disciplines.
Alongside recordings of conversations and ambient sound, her practice is rooted in observational sketchbook drawing and plein air painting. These are developed using any appropriate media to reflect on the situation and may include painting, digital media, sound, film and installation.
Currently she is engaged in two projects. The first is an ongoing residency with the Ness of Brodgar archaeological excavations in Orkney, which documents the everyday process of the annual dig and the archaeologists’ personal involvement with the Neolithic. The second, The Power of Toys, investigates adult relationships with toys. This consists of two strands - studio practice exploring her own relationship with toys, and a parallel investigation into the health benefits of toys for the elderly, including those with dementia.
Karen has also been keeping a drawing journal since 2013, posting a daily drawing on Facebook and Instagram.
