I once commented that ‘my culture is like the outermost layer that will never touch my skin’. Chinese ink is conceptualised in this performance as a cultural conduit, an elemental entity that is formless, and indeterminate. Yet, it is sharp, and jolting, like a blade that cuts through the toughest skin.
