Visual Communications & Volunteer coordinator Internships: Paid Internships for Bath Spa Uni students

It’s back! Calling all Bath Spa Uni students:
come work with FaB.

We're excited to be offering two paid internships with FaB, kindly funded by the ‘Bath Spa Works: Third Sector Internship scheme’ for Bath Spa University students.

  • Volunteer Coordinator Internship

  • Application Deadline: 27th March 2025

  • 120 hours total roughly 8h per week from April to mid-May, then increasing to 20h per week between 12 May - 10 June. 

  • Pay: £1,250 Employability Award through BSU

Visual Communications Internship

What will you be doing?

From April to June, you'll be working on visuals for Fringe Arts Bath Festival (taking place 23 May to 7 June). You might not get all this done, as part of a team this is what we're aiming to achieve with you:

  • In the build-up, working within our visual brand you will: 

  • Layout of out listings hand-out (A1 folding to A5)

  • Create a map of venues

  • Design and create indoor signage for our venues (to be cut in sticky-back vinyl)

  • Design and create outdoor signage to go across the city

  • 'Wayfinding' eg. walk some routes between venues to decide where outdoor signage should be placed

Online, throughout:

  • Designing & scheduling social media posts about events, venues, exhibitions etc.

  • Communicating with curators, artists and performers for content updates (text, images, links, events)

  • Website updates (Squarespace)

  • Post online listings

During installation: 

  • Installing signage throughout venues and externally

  • Providing guidance to others on visuals and layouts

During the festival:

  • Documenting the opening night (photo, video etc)

  • Documenting the exhibitions

  • Documenting performances and events

  • Social media live-streams and sharing what's going on

What you can expect

You will be designing varied visual elements, both web-based and physical things like signage for Fringe Arts Bath Festival, Bath's only annual festival of visual arts. You'll work with this year's visuals, our overall brand style and voice to keep our message consistent and identifiable by our audience. You'll have the chance to join the team at Fringe Arts Bath (known as FaB), a non-profit, Artist-led organisation, to learn the ropes and gain critical career experience within a creative and collaborative environment.You will work together with FaB’s existing Lead Producer and occasionally other team members.

Your skills and experience

Desirable:

  • An interest in arts & culture

  • Enthusiasm for making a difference in the community

  • The ability to think outside the box

  • Experience of using Meta, Canva, Squarespace, Linkedin

  • Experience of live-streaming on socials

  • Video recording skills

  • Photographic skills

Essential:

  • An understanding of visual communications

  • Flexibility, initiative, willingness to contribute ideas

  • Experience of using social media

  • Experience of using design software

  • Understanding of wayfinding principles

  • Understanding of what makes a good promo image / photograph

  • Ideally, you will bring your own laptop with design software, though arrangements can be made through BSU if you don't have one.

  • We really need someone reliable, who has the time to work with us. If your timetable is super busy and you're not sure you can fit in the extra work, let us know at interview stage, we can talk and work out whether this is the right role for you.

Length of Internship

  • 12 weeks spread between April 2025 to June 2025

  • Exact hours & dates will be agreed upon with potential candidates to fit existing commitments and needs.


Volunteer coordinator Internship

What will you be doing?

From April to June, you'll be recruiting and managing volunteers for Fringe Arts Bath Festival (taking place 23 May to 7 June). The role starts in April, but the bulk of the work will take place nearer and during the festival dates. 

You'll be a primary point of contact for volunteers, checking they know their shifts, finding back-up when people can't come in, making sure all are trained, safe and happy with their roles, helping everyone feel valued, whatever their level of contribution.

In the build-up, you will: 

  • Organise, promote and co-host up to 3 volunteer meetings

  • Provide content for social media posts about volunteering profiles and opportunities

  • Create volunteer recruitment posters and display these around Bath Spa Uni campuses

  • Outline specific volunteer roles, eg. installation tech, or event photographer

  • Outline a general festival volunteer role

  • Gather volunteers contact details using official safe systems

  • Communicate with volunteers using FaB's email accounts

  • Communicate with team members about ongoing needs

  • Populate and manage a timetable of volunteer activities

During installation (16 - 23 May), the festival itself (23 May - 7 June) and take-down (8 June + a few days after) you'll be managing the volunteers who will work alongside the FaB team, curators and participating artists, with the following tasks:

  • Installation: DIY skills are handy for this one! Painting walls, installing signage, handling some tech equipment, keeping spaces clean and organised.

  • Invigilating: open and tidy exhibition spaces, welcome visitors, keep track of numbers and possibly gather feedback.

  • Assisting with events: setting up chairs, serving refreshments, packing up etc.

  • Photographers to document the festival: recording the opening night (photo, video etc / documenting the exhibitions / performances and events / social media live-streams and sharing what's going on.

  • De-installing exhibitions: wrapping & labelling artworks, making good and cleaning venues, shifting things back into storage.

You might not get all this done! As part of a team this is what we're aiming to achieve with you.

What you can expect

You will be playing a key role in making Fringe Arts Bath festival (known as FaB) run smoothly, bringing good people into a great team for a welcoming, positive and fun experience. Fringe Arts Bath Festival is Bath's only annual festival of visual arts, and participants (volunteers, artists, curators) often tell us they feel valued, however much time or work they have contributed.

About the Fringe Arts Bath

Fringe Arts Bath (FaB) aims to raise the profile of contemporary visual arts in Bath and beyond, providing early-career and emerging Curators and Artists with a platform for development as well as opportunities to test their ideas beyond the gallery-based arts scene.

FaB facilitates collaborative projects between Curators, Artists, and commissioning bodies throughout the year, runs Fringe Arts Bath Festival every summer, and the annual Bath Open Art Prize in autumn
