Meet the Judges

Bridget Sterling

Bridget Sterling

Curator and Educator Bridget Sterling successfully combines extensive experience in the commercial world of contemporary fine art with a passion for education and facilitating the skills required for managing careers in the creative arts.

Arriving in the UK from a politically fraught South Africa in 1990, Bridget initially established herself in business, including working in design and PR. She then returned to education, gaining a Masters’ degree in fine art from Bath Spa University after studying for her first qualification at Kingston University.

For the past seven years Bridget has been Director and Curator of two art galleries: Bath Contemporary and, more recently, Axle Arts which is now establishing itself as an online contemporary fine art gallery, which also exhibits with collaborative business partners.

Bridget has developed a work experience programme for undergraduates which introduces them to all aspects of commercial gallery operations. Having extended this work into employability, she now offers courses which include developing personal strategies as well as fostering an understanding of how the art world works.

Jillian Sutherland, M.A.

Jillian Sutherland, M.A.

PhD Researcher, School of Art and Design, Bath Spa University.

Jill is a museum researcher with a love of art and keen interests in interpretation and curatorial practice. Her Masters in the History of Art (University of Bristol) focused on contemporary art exhibits, and was inspired by early Surrealist art curator, Julien Levy. and she is currently conducting doctoral research into how small museum curators relate to audiences in the South West.

Jill has been working in museums and galleries in the region for the past decade, and was most recently the Artisa Curatorial Fellow at the Holburne Museum, where she curated a redisplay of the Plantation Day Book, Barbados, 1722. The new, permanent, display engages with colonial connections and radical Bath & Somerset histories, and features original work by contemporary artist Alberta Whittle (Turner Prize Bursary winner, 2020).
