2011 CALL OUT IS HERE!

Bath's Fringe Visual Arts Festival - Friday May 27 to Sunday June 12, 2011

FRINGE ARTS BATH CALL FOR INTEREST 2011

FAB is Bath‟s only annual visual arts festival and we are looking for artists to submit work to the following shows.

This year we are very proud to say we will be running our first arts prize „The Real Bath Prize‟ open to anyone to interpret the wonderful city of Bath in an original way.

We actively promote and celebrate contemporary art in the Bath area and beyond, showcasing early career artists and curators, and those who find it difficult to break into (or prefer to operate outside of) the gallery based art scene. FAB frequently uses “alternative”, temporary exhibition spaces - anything from street corners, shops and shopping centres to front rooms and cafes. We are a not for profit organisation and receive little funding, relying on enthusiastic volunteers to enable us to put on each year‟s programme of shows and events.

Our call out for 2011 includes

1. Open invite for group shows- Exhibition/Event

We are looking for a diverse, innovative, fresh and  interesting collection of artworks ready to sell in this year’s unique one-day outdoor event! Previous exhibitors have sold: paintings, ceramics, textiles, prints, sculptures, paper products, knitwear and much more! There will be a relaxed Sunday vibe, with bars, live music, street performers among other things.

Please send details and images of your work by post or email to register your interest

The Collective

‘The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloguing, displaying, storing and maintaining items of interest to the collector’.

‘The Collective’ are calling for paraphernalia, ephemera, everyday obsessions, objects, images, archives, curios and repetitions. The exhibition will explore how artists and non-artists translate ‘stuff’ to become art or non-art.

To make a submission please email

4

Universals

We are looking for projects that take their starting point from the idea of a collection, and who seek to exploit this within a contemporary practice.

Work from any medium is accepted (sculpture, photography, printmaking, moving image). However the work must, be original and a collection of your own making.

This will sit alongside another exhibition that seeks to take a personal collection, and re-contextualise it. Ideas can explore ideas of collections themselves, or use the collection as a spring board for further conceptual development.

All submissions must include:

• Proposal for the exhibition. (500 words max)

• CD with examples of your work.

• CV/artist statement.

Where do we go to be healed?

Developed and Curated by Antony Mottershead and Melissa Hinkin.

Where do we go to be healed? is a project devised as part of Fringe Arts Bath 2011, inspired by the legacy of the Roman baths the aim is to question our collective ideas surrounding the notion of healing and remedy.

An online Blog will go live in the New Year. Here you will be able to share your thoughts, words, photographs, video, music, anything which conveys your ideas of healing. This project will be presented during FAB 2011 in a printed catalogue format, edited by Antony and Melissa.

We Live in Public

Invites expressions of interest from artists whose work responds to our culture of ever-increasing surveillance, particularly that with a tongue-in-cheek approach. In the wake of 9/11 and Big Brother, with Google Street View at our fingertips, surely we are all peeping toms? Painting, photography, sculpture, installation and site-specific work considered.

Heart of Darkness

This exhibition aims to explore the various forms of darkness that may be encountered regarding some thing, act, or event that one has witnessed or been involved in. Potential artists should send a summary and explanation of the work they intend to exhibit. Images of the work, or previous work, would be appreciated.

 The REAL Bath Prize

This art competition is your chance to help create a picture of the REAL Bath, not just Pulteney Bridge, the Royal Crescent and Bath Abbey – this is about the places that the real people of Bath live, work and play in – the little places, the ugly places, the neglected places even the, dare we say it, modern places.

When you enter the REAL Bath Prize you will be allocated your location from which to create your masterpiece. Who knows, it could be ‘The Railway Arches behind Esso on Lower Bristol Road’, ‘Bath Police Station, Manvers Street’, ‘The Ex DHSS building, St James Street West’ or ‘The Sports Centre’? One thing is for certain it won’t be a part of Bath you are used to seeing on a picture postcard.

This competition closes 31st March 2011
