As the rivers of England face ongoing challenges from human-made causes, The Waters of Sulis & Beyond highlights the work of 14 artists sharing what freshwater means to them through abstract, eco-conscious photographic interpretations.
This project takes its title from the Roman name for the city of Bath, Aquae Sulis (translated as Waters of Sulis). It was during their rule in Britain that the Celtic goddess Sulis became interwoven with the Roman goddess Minerva and the worshipped deity of the thermal springs that feed the city’s baths.
It is also a cry for those viewing the images or attending the events to think about the freshwater habitats where they live, and further afield, and how we can collectively care more for water, rivers and the riverine.

Josie Purcell is a Cornwall-based eco-photographic artist. She is interested in the human impact on nature, with a focus on riverine/estuarine environmental issues.
Josie founded Cornwall’s first participatory eco-darkroom ShutterPod in 2012 and the Photopocence podcast in 2021.
Gaining a distinction in her Masters in Photography with Falmouth University for her work relating to the global sand crisis in 2018, Josie is now a Visiting Lecturer and part-time PhD researcher at the University.
Josie has exhibited internationally and runs eco-photo-art workshops in Cornwall.
